What is Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival?


In winter, there is a festival held to show the great heart of the local people. It is called the Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival located in Gangwon-do. In winter, Hwacheon gathers current and former residents for the preparation of this festival, which start next January 10 and will last until January 27, 2009. This is a unique winter festival that presents Gangwon-do's clean and clear nature and the warm hearts of the people of Hwacheon.


Sancheoneo(Mountain trout into Korean) is a fish in the Salmonidae genus of the Salmoniformes family and only inhabits cool, pure streams of 20℃ or below. The unique patterns called parrmark on its back make it highly beautiful; it is known as 'the queen of valleys'. Sancheoneo is a rare species and is characterized by firm, chewy flesh and a nutty, sweet taste. At this Festival, don't forget to enjoy sancheoneo fishing on ice and lure fishing. There are also snow and ice events such as snow-sledding, ice-sledding, bobsledding, and an ice train.


Bare-Handed Sancheoneo Fishing allows everyone to dip their hands in a huge tank full of Sancheoneo at the Ice Plaza and to try to catch a Sancheoneo. As Sancheoneo live in rapid currents, they are very fast and it is not easy to catch them bare handed. Therefore, it is fun both to try to catch them by yourself as well as to watch others trying to catch them.


To fully enjoy the festival, don’t miss the Amazing Sled Making Contest, which showcases numerous individually crafted sleds. Participants summon up their creativity to make a sled like no other in the world. Every year, you are sure to find unique sleds that look like submarines, penguins, and even Santa Claus.
